AN AUCTION THE FIRST ADAPT DISABILITY RIGHTS “T” SHIRT. This auction is for the very first ADAPT “t” shirt from the first National Adapt action in Washington D.C. in 1984. ADAPT then stood for American Disabled for Accessible Public Transport. ADAPT shirts were exhibited in 2000 at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC.
This shirt sits alongside these in the struggle for human freedom.
By Babs Johnson
In October of 1984 ADAPT traveled to Washington D.C.
This was the first city that we traveled to. That was the first T-Shirt that we made. The action included a training of about 20 people from around the country. One of the most memorable events of that action was blocking off Pennsylvania Ave. in front of the White House during rush hour. People got out of their chairs and lay in front of buses. We looked up, as the sun was going down, and there were orange flashers up and down the streets put there by the cops! There were no cars going down the street because they had blocked it off. What a feeling of POWER!
This shirt comes signed by some of the very first Adapt activists who went off the sidewalk in Denver Colorado to block the first bus in the campaign for accessible transport.
It also comes with a sworn affidavit that this is a genuine artifact signed by people who were there in DC and actually made the shirt.
As far as we are aware this is only one of two shirts left in the world and the only one that is ever going to be authentically on sale.
The shirt comes in a beautiful frame that also includes photographs from the event where it was worn and photos of the original 19 people who started ADAPT in Denver and photo’s from the first national action in Washington DC in 1984.
National ADAPT affirms that this will be a one time only sale and that no other shirt of its kind will be sold again. This is your only chance to acquire this historic shirt.
