Years ago; I think 11 now. I heard Mike Oxford talking about ADAPT and the mission to end the institutional bias in America. I thought this was right up my alley and I needed to get involved and I became determined to do whatever I could to help with the cause. When I had an accident, I was in the hospital for 3 1/2 months. Suddenly: wham, bang the next thing I knew I was lying in a Nursing Home.
Not knowing at that time I had a choice to say NO to the doctor's. Thanks for a strong family they came and got me out and brought me back to Kansas and THANKS to the GREAT advocates here in Kansas that got the waiver programs started, I was able to get services and live in my OWN HOME and COMMUNITY.
And I needed a way to THANK them and my way was joining ADAPT and doing something good to make sure that no one would have to go through what I did in that damn nursing home.
FREE OUR PEOPLE! And I will keep doing it till the day I die.
