ADAPT Vigil Day Three

No cuts, no caps and no changes

(DENVER, July 7, 2002) ADAPT advocates lead a coalition in an ongoing vigil today at the Human Services Building that started on Friday when the state Medicaid Director confirmed that Home Health services would be cut 5 percent.

“We are out here now to insist that there are no cuts, no caps and no changes,” said Julie Aird of Boulder ADAPT.

Advocates gathered in the shade under an ADAPT banner that reads “free our people,” with sleeping bags, food and water crowding the sidewalk. With chalk advocates had drawn slogans on the sidewalk and decorated the area with flowers donated by a passer-by.

“They better make a decision soon,” said Dawn Russell of ADAPT, “because we are pretty good at this. All the mishaps of the first night were cleared up, it has been smooth.”

Last night and today advocates had been discussing the goals of the vigil and report today that there is no confusion in the coalition lead by ADAPT. Starting Monday, the group will also target the state legislature to retract the home health cuts. Particularly troubling to activists is that the reimbursements to facilities are protected in state statutes, even though institutional care is the most expensive and least desirable care.
